Educational Equity Requires Transformative Leaders
Limited Capacity filling up

“Educational Equity Requires Transformative Leaders.” This presentation will provide attendees with an outline for putting leadership and cultural proficiency theory and concepts into practice towards not just improving but changing school systems. Leaders need to recognize and understand how to challenge institutional status quo and educator perspectives that create an unlevel playing field for a majority- minority student demographic. This presentation will introduce transformative leadership and explain how the concepts and tools of cultural proficiency can generate praxis. Equity is action towards creating a more inclusive and equitable organization to improve educator effectiveness, positive student outcomes, and increased parent engagement. We will also present an outline for building capacity and sustainability for school transformation. Our schools need leaders who recognize it is not “business as usual.” That what is needed “is a critical approach to leadership grounded in Freire’s (1970) fourfold call for critical awareness or conscientization, followed by critical reflection, critical analysis, and finally, for activism or critical action...hence it begins with awareness -- of self, of the strengths, weaknesses, and challenges of our society, and of our school system” (Shields, 2018, p.11). In summary, true Equity requires transformative leaders who know how to change TK-12 learning systems not just improve them.

Providing Equity Through Summer Engagement
Limited Capacity seats available

In June 2016, South San Francisco Unified School District (SSFUSD) and ENGIE collaborated to launch the District’s first-ever Summer of STEM program, demonstrating the District’s commitment to being a leader in STEM disciplines to foster student success in high school, college, and 21st century careers. The program has been incredibly impactful, focusing on serving students in Grades 3-8, providing hands-on STEM activities, real-world relevance, and project-based learning experiences. As we know there is an incredible learning gap that occurs throughout the summer months. This gaps occurs due to (1) limited language supports during summer intervention and (2)limited opportunities for our underserved students, in particular English Learners and low socio-economically disadvantaged students, to access STEM learning opportunities. For this reason, our summer program was developed to support STEM through the language lens.

Students in Grades 3-8 participate in a four-week program to gain exposure to building energy transformation machines, engineering solar ovens, designing and testing wind turbine blades, and conducting classroom energy audits. included building Rube Goldberg machines, designing circuit mazes, and designing, building, and testing efficient homes. We proud to say, for three straight years, the Summer of STEM program has brought meaningful educational enhancement to over 900 students, 50 teachers, and over 500 families across our District. Our STEM program has been awarded the Golden Bell award from the California School Board Association.

Our district found a program that can simultaneously meet the needs of underserved students while exposing them to the much STEM standards that will prepare them for the 21st century.

We hope our presentation can provide you with an overview of our program and the tools necessary to replicate this program that is helping us move the needle for success of our underserved students.

The Power of Media: Sharing Your Story of Equity and Inclusion for All Students
Limited Capacity filling up

Telling the story of your district has never been more important. If you aren’t taking the lead, then someone else is. Whether it’s a community misinformed or an unhappy parent, rumors can often spread like wildfire, flooding social media, quickly making it very difficult to keep up with negative perceptions and mistruths. You know better than anyone how many amazing things are going on in your schools every single day. The best way to convince your community of the great work is by highlighting it, by telling your story. Hundreds of schools and districts have taken the leap and created videos that exemplify the programs that address the needs of all students, the excellent teaching and learning going on in classrooms and skills students are learning that are preparing them for the next step in their lives to be college and career ready. What’s holding you back? Leave this session inspired with tools and of ideas that will leave you wondering which program(s) in your organization you want to highlight first.

Cultivating Competent Educational Leadership in the age of Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook!
Limited Capacity seats available

The Latino population in the United States reached nearly 58 million in 2016 and has been the principal driver of U.S. demographic growth, accounting for half of national population growth since 2000. Nonetheless, the number of Latinos serving as educators and role models for Latinos is not keeping pace with the Latino population growth.  It goes without saying that diversity in the workplace is critical because it enables individuals to work effectively in cross-cultural/generational situations and promotes respect and understanding of diverse cultures/social groups.

Latino leadership in education and its potential for positively impacting children of color is critically important to closing opportunity gaps. When committed educational leaders provide essential supports to Latino children they can perform better, achieve their goals, and contribute significantly to the betterment of their communities. Re-examining the role of the school administrator during our current age of redefined communication and massive information consumption.
This session will focus on leadership lessons learned while working in Public Educational Administration, including strategies used to be successful despite hurdles and stereotypes in the age of the iGeneration. Topics will include the use of technology to boost and not bust your career, social media in education, best practices, and successful strategies including but not limited to distributed and inclusive leadership, shared decision making, norms of professional conduct, building relationships and networking, political savvy, cultivating a sponsor, and balancing work and home!

A Systems Approach to Change: Policy & Advocacy for English Learner Success in Los Angeles and California
Limited Capacity seats available

English learner students continue to have some of the widest achievement and opportunity gaps in our state across multiple measures. Last year, more than 85% of English learner students across all grades in California did not meet English and math standards. And yet, the various and diverse needs of this non-monolithic group continue to go unmet. This session will share the strategies and lessons learned  by establishing the Consortium for English Learner Success-- a group of over 70 educators, civil rights, research, philanthropy, and community-based groups working to improve educational access, quality, and outcomes for English Learner students in Los Angeles County and California through policy and legislative advocacy. This session will discuss the development of an aligned approach to improve the conditions that allow districts and schools to be successful through state and local policy change. Led by the California Community Foundation, the Consortium is part of a larger strategy to support English Learner success in L.A. County that includes supporting a set of school improvement networks.

We Lead Strong! - An Examination of Principal Professional Development in California
Limited Capacity seats available

California principals need professional development to build their leadership capacity not only during principal preparation but throughout their leadership career.  School districts have a responsibility to provide professional development to principals and they are lacking in their development and implementation of a system of support (Honig, Copland, Rainey, Lorton, & Newton, 2010; Kearney, 2010; Manna, 2015; Sun, 2011).  This session will share results from an examination of what California school districts are doing to supervise and provide principal professional development that is aligned to standards, and effective professional development constructs. The findings share promising practices, tools and models that can be used to support school districts and principal supervisors in their quest to provide optimum principal supervision and professional development.

The Opportunity Gap, Education Finance, & Resource Equity: Engineering financial data systems and strategy for equitable student outcomes
Limited Capacity full

For decades, we’ve talked about the Opportunity Gap in education ... but what about the Resource Gap? Do inequitable outcomes reflect inequitable inputs? Education finance is more than just spreadsheets and budget hearings — it is a civil rights issue. The quality and availability of educational resources have a direct impact on student outcomes.

This workshop will explore the relationship between the Resource Gap and the Achievement Gap, with specific considerations for addressing the needs of Latinx students. Despite being publicly available, education finance data is often cloaked in mystery because the presentation of budget and spending data is complex and difficult to comprehend. Through a Q&A-style reflection on lessons learned and best practices, participants will discover how districts can modernize financial data systems and processes to make the budgeting process more strategic, collaborative, and equitable.

Leadership Simulations: Meaningful and scalable tool for PD and Team Building
Limited Capacity seats available

To be a great leader, certainly skills are essential, but what is often missing, is Experience. Experience implies the ability to use good judgment in even the most complex situations and to have the Resilience to handle the blowback that is sure to follow. Like a Flight Simulator, Leadership SIMS enable leaders to gain realistic Experience without putting real students in danger. Leaders have the opportunity to gain critical experience in a risk free context.

During the workshop, the facilitators will introduce the concept of Simulation and how we can effectively deploy meaningful experience and then have the participants actually play a Sim to experience it for themselves and see how the exercise can be both developmental and an opportunity for team building and collaboration.

Disrupting Patterns of Inequity
Limited Capacity seats available

As the inequality in education for low- vs. high-income students continues to perpetuate cyclical poverty, we must disrupt patterns of inequity by equipping our teachers with more than academic tool-kits and build their social and emotional capacity so they can model and effectively develop the SEL of their students. The Leader in Me approach targets a persistent driver of the equity gap: the limiting paradigms of low-SES students and their teachers. During this high-energy, interactive session, we will engage in meaningful discussion focused on how to disrupt patterns of inequity and create a holistic approach to developing the social and emotional leadership of students and staff.  A local educator (Tobie Pace) will share how that system has helped empower EL students and assisted in closing the achievement gap at her school.
